Richard Cumpston

Richard worked briefly as an electrical engineer, and then became an actuary. In 1997, together with Hugh Sarjeant, he set up Cumpston Sarjeant Pty Ltd, consulting actuaries. Much of his work was in general insurance and expert evidence in litigation. In 2007 he began full-time PhD study at the Australian National University, developing techniques for the microsimulation of Australian households. After graduating in 2012, he helped set up Australian Projections, and continues to work full time for them as managing director. He has chaired the ACT division of the Australian Association of Gerontology, and is currently vice-president of the Council on the Ageing ACT.

Hugh Sarjeant

Hugh worked as a computer programmer and actuarial analyst, before becoming an actuary. At Cumpston Sarjeant he specialised in superannuation and expert evidence in personal injury litigation. He helped set up Australian Projections, and continues to be a director. He left Cumpston Sarjeant in 2012 and now works as a computer consultant on aged care and optimal locations of service facilities.

He is president of Dying with Dignity Victoria.

David Service

After working as a consulting actuary and banking executive, David became the head of actuarial studies at the Australian National University. He supervised Richard’s PhD thesis, providing expertise on data base design. His own PhD was on the computer analysis of disability insurance data. He helped set up Australian Projections, and continues to be a director. Together with Richard and Hugh, he has published research on life expectancies and mortality causes. He has experience as an expert witness in financial and personal injury litigation.
